MassComm juniors pursue socially relevant issues for thesis

By Kleir Pineda

The third year Mass Communication defended their thesis proposals last March 25. Most of the topics that were presented were considered issues that are socially-relevant.

Mass Communication Department Chairs Prof. Flordeliz Abanto said that she “cannot say if the topics are effective. They (the students) are not yet done with their research and interviews. But most of the proposed topics are connected with the theme of the school.”

Professor Abanto also said “Most of them have interesting paper. They all need to research first. And at this point it’s too early to say who has the chance to be on the best thesis and it depends on the coverage of their topic”. It shows that students need to double their effort to make the most of what they have. Everyone has the chance to get that award. Perseverance and dedication is the key to having a successful thesis.

Professors who paneled the defense were Mass Communication professors: Prof. Ma. Aurora Lomibao, Prof. Jerrie Abella, Prof. Archie Ligo, Prof. Prima Jesusa Quinsayas, Prof. Johnathan Rondina, Prof. John Nosenas, Prof. Michelle Remo, and Prof. Marina Merida.

All of the proposed topics for this year have a social relevance in our country’s situation nowadays. A student from the minor of Development Communication, Rachel Clavio said “Yung topic namin ay Internally Displaced People. Hindi sila nabibigyan ng much attention lalo na yung IDP’s with regards to armed conflict. Yung mga nabibigyan lang ng attention na IDP is yung mga caused by natural calamities” (Our topic is about Internally Displaced People. They’re not given much attention especially the IDP’s with regards to armed conflict. The ones who are given attention instead are those IDPs who are affected by the natural calamities). This is the reason why the thesis group of Rachel in decided to pursue their study.

Most of the critiques of the panelists are positive as what Professor Abanto said. But still, the students need to look for more information and research that they could use on their thesis.
